“They are a blessing but be prepared for a tough journey with constants trips to the hospitals because they usually suffer digestive issues, congenital heart defects, under developed respiratory system, hearing loss and speech problems, slow growth and other developmental delays.” The NICU staff was talking about my son Miguelangel, born with Down Syndrome.
The prognosis was overwhelming but I refused to anticipate calamities and I chose instead to expect the best outcome and take action to give my son the opportunity to live a beautiful, normal life.
Fast forward to a year later (March 17, 2012), I am happy to report that Miguelangel has enjoyed almost perfect health. He’s only suffered suffered from one single cold and stomach flu, both treated with Essential Oils and homeopathic medicine. He is now in the lower end of a normal growth chart and without adjusting his age, a common protocol due to his prematurity (Miguelangel was born at 33 weeks of gestation).
While I reflected yesterday on this journey, I realized the important lesson I can apply in every area of my life.
1. Always see the possibilities
2. Expect the best outcome
3. Take Action
Always see the possibilities.
I’ve noticed that it is very easy for us to anticipate defeat and we, at some level, even take pride in our ability to do so. Have you ever heard yourself say, I knew I couldn’t do it. I knew there was something wrong but I couldn’t tell what was it. I am so weak. I am not a good at writing. But, are you good at anything? Of course, you are! From now on, be alert and once you catch yourself making those statements and seeing only your weaknesses shift your attention to your strengths. I am sure they outnumber the weaknesses.
Expect the best outcome
On the same lines of the previous point, reach always for the best. Imagine your best life ever. Stretch your imagination, make big plans, see yourself accomplishing every goal and you will find yourself exceeding your expectations.
Take Action
This step was pivotal point in my son’s journey. I didn’t think about the two first steps and sat there expecting him to grow and develop the appropriate skills by chance. No, I did extensive research to educate myself about the therapies that would affect his development and then I went to work. From Reiki and yoga to nutritional intervention and regular physical therapy disguised as playful time, I did to accomplish my goal.
Now, not everything is said here and we might encounter setbacks in a given area at some point but, I do not compare my son to other children. Not because of his genetic disorder but because I am aware that every human being is a unique individual “equipped” with a particular set of weaknesses and strengths. I know that many parents get upset with the labels used to refer to children with disabilities and I was one of them. If you tell me now that my son is special, I wouldn’t discuss it. He confirms that every day. Miguelangel is a beautiful child of God, a perfect baby who is now becoming a perfect toddler. Yes, I said perfect! Aren’t we all perfect beings. I believe so.
We have been told that only God is perfect but, aren’t we made at the image and likeness of God. Doesn’t that make us perfect? At a different stage of growth, yes. But still perfect and, with the ability to express God’s magnificence through our lives. God says, “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.”
Then, who are you to doubt your own ability to be perfect? When you doubt your God-like attributes you are denying God.
I say again, you are perfect just as you are right now. I learned this principle a few years back, but I didn’t grasp the entire concept then. I pondered about it and I came up with this analogy with a plant. A Plant is born from a seed and when is planted in a fertile soil starts a process of growth and transformation. After a few days, the seed sprouts to come out of the soil and to grow roots. It keeps growing slowly until leaves and branch stems develop. Once the plant reaches the reproduction stage, a beautiful flower will develop as well.  The process continues to provide the opportunity to start the cycle of life again through it fruits. My point is, was the seed perfect? Was the plant with its small leaves and branches perfect? Or, was only the plant with the flower at its perfect state?
The same occurs with you. You are perfect at this point. You were perfect yesterday and you will be perfect later. We are perfect, divine beings and our ultimate goal should be to recognize our divinity to manifest our magnificence.
Imagine your Dreams, Expect the Best, Take action, Enjoy Success!
